Eloise Skinner

Eloise Skinner is a yoga, Pilates, flexibility, stretch & dance instructor, with decades of experience in fitness and dance. She is passionate about movement, music and embodiment, and her classes are playful, inclusive and explorative.

At what point did you first try flexibility and why?
“I’ve always loved movement – growing up, I did a lot of sports, including swimming, gymnastics and dance. Dance and gymnastics in particular introduced me to flexibility training, and my passion for ballet meant I started to take it seriously!”

What was it that made you fall in love with flexibility in those early stages?
“It’s exciting to try new things, and create new shapes – and it feels great to stretch out! There’s always a fun challenge in seeing what new skills you can discover.”

What benefits does flexibility bring to your life on a personal level now?
“In my work as a teacher, a strong flexibility practice helps with mobility, strength and self-awareness – it enables me to teach a busy schedule of classes without getting injured!”

Teaching at London Dance Academy

What is it that you love most about teaching?
“It’s so rewarding to see people fall in love with a class or a style of movement – for me, the most important thing is that people are finding a safe, long-term love of moving in their own bodies!”

What is your proudest London Dance Academy (or fitness) achievement to date?
“When I was new to contortion (a long time ago!), I started taking classes at London Dance Academy. The teachers were so knowledgeable, and I loved my experience – I felt really safe and encouraged.”

How would you define your own personal teaching style?
“Playful, light-hearted and inclusive! I always provide options, with the intention for students to personalise and individualise their own practice. And I love to update my playlist so I can create the best background music!”

Yoga for me has been the silver lining I got out of having several injuries sustained to my body over the years. I stepped on to the mat because I suffered from chronic issues caused by an old clavicle (collarbone) break and then flew into the air because of tearing a ligament in my wrist. Not only did I find that the pulling and grabbing in Aerial Yoga helped strengthen my posterior chain, upper body strength and also rehabilitate my wrist injury allowing me to go back to the mat; I also found it really helped relieve tension and issues caused by my clavicle injury and bad shoulder by rebalancing my body strength for the better. I am grateful for now being able to help my students discover this practice and its benefits.
